Spurred by the successful deployment of Too Good To Go in 19 French shopping centres and more than 126,000 meals saved in 2019, the Group decided to roll out the solution gradually in 7 other European countries in 2020, with the ambitious goal of saving 220,000 meals this year!
Back in 2018, URW Link initiated a partnership with the French start-up that fights food waste, Too Good to Go. Indeed, the Group is aware of the food waste issue as its shopping destinations welcome more and more food sellers. So Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield saw this innovative solution as an opportunity to reduce retailers’ unsold food of the day, and the solution proved to be efficient with a first proof of concept (POC) carried out in Euralille (2,000 meals saved in 4 months).
Then in 2019, the Group deployed the solution Too Good To Go in all its French shopping centres with the initial goal to save up to 100,000 meals by the end of the year. Thanks to this strong partnership (awarded “Prize of the most efficient cooperation” by the Village Awards of the Village by CA in 2019) and over 120 involved retailers, the Group exceeded the target set, that represents the equivalent of 230 tons of CO2, and ended up saving 126,000 meals in one year (representing 290 tons of CO2).
Pushing food waste reduction further in 2020 with the European deployment
Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield now plans to support the deployment of Too Good To Go in 7 additional countries throughout Europe: Germany, Austria, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom, with an objective to save 220,000 meals by the end of 2020. The Group also intends to launch similar initiatives with local partners in European countries where the Too Good To Go app is not yet available.
In line with the Group’s ambitious CSR strategy Better Places 2030 that aims to reduce by half its carbon emissions by 2030, URW Link, the Group’s open innovation platform, partners with promising start-ups to offer concrete sustainable solutions and to contribute to accelerating the solutions’ growth. This strong collaboration with Too Good To Go is going further to fight food waste, but also to encourage customers be drivers of change and to help retailers be more responsible and generate additional revenue with a meaningful and useful tool.

We are very proud of these results, and thrilled to see that we are bringing together our retailers and our communities to fight food waste. Making them part of our action in favour of a more sustainable consumption is one of the pillars of our strategy “Better Places 2030”. Our collaboration with Too Good To Go shows that we are reinventing tomorrow’s shopping destinations, by making them more attractive and sustainable through innovation.Julie Villet
